Book ClubBook Club is an opportunity for you to choose a book that you want to read and work with a small group (or partner) to discuss it in class.
ProcedureCHOOSE A BOOK
We will go to the library to find appropriate books for you to check out. While you make a choice about a book, you should also start to figure out your group. Groups can be anywhere between 2-3 people. The only requirement is that you are all reading the same book. |
ESTABLISH A READING SCHEDULE

As a group, you will determine a reading and discussion schedule. Do the following two things:
- Complete a BOOK CLUB INFORMATION SHEET. You will receive a hard copy of this in class. Depending on time, you will have 4-5 reading and/or discussion days. I will usually offer several reading days in class. Your group should divide your book into four/five equal(ish) reading sections. My suggestion for dividing the book is to take the total number of pages and divide by four. Then, look to see where the closest chapter breaks are to help you determine your final sections.
- Take the information from your BOOK CLUB INFORMATION SHEET and use it to complete one BOOK CLUB INFORMATION GOOGLE FORM so that I know what your self-imposed due dates are. (Note that I only need one person in the group to fill out the form.)
READING DAYS
Depending on our schedule and requirements in class, I will offer you a few reading days for each book club cycle. On these days, you should read your book club book. If you finish your group's assignment early, you may read something else of your choice. The point is to use these days to work on your reading stamina and fluency.

DISCUSSION DAYS
For each discussion day (and for each section of your book), I will expect you and your group to journal and then discuss different elements of the book. Some days you and your group will determine the journal topics; other days I will prescribe the topic for you. After you complete your journal, your group will complete a discussion activity or task to turn in for a grade.
